On the road again…

October 20, 2015 by Patricia

On the road again…

Cyclers Unite!I didn’t go as far as I was planning this weekend, but there’s a reason for that. My friend Tom got his new handcycle!

Tom has been riding with Achilles for a few months on the Philly Achilles hand cycle. He is hardcore and decided that he needed his own cycle. After some fundraising and a generous donation, his new cycle was ready for its maiden voyage. I was lucky enough to get to go with him.

I recognized some of what I felt when I got to ride the first time. I’m betting that he thought some of these same thoughts:

  • Holy crow! This is amazing!
  •  I’m going fast under my own power!
  • This hill sucks!
  • This could be addicting…what have I gotten myself into?

More people should get this opportunity.  They shouldn’t have to do it the hard way.  So this is one way to try to make it easier.  I’m blogging and riding and asking for sponsorship so that we can have the equipment for smiles like these.

Sponsor me!

My brain is weird

My brain is weird

I had another long ride this past weekend and there comes a point when you need to keep yourself amused. My brain has music playing in it almost all the time. Sometimes the music is appropriate. Sometimes it is not.

For some reason, this long ride had a theme song of “Help me, Rhonda!” by the Beach Boys. Until you spend an hour or more with this playing in your head, you may be unaware of what an awful song it is.

So this guy (let’s just call him Brian) is broken hearted.   He and Whatshername were going to marry and live happily ever after but this guy came between them.  Now, Brian spotted Rhonda out and about (a party? a tag sale? where was Rhonda?) and she looked fine.  So Brian invites Rhonda to be his rebound person.  There is no suggestion that Brian likes Rhonda  or thinks that Rhonda might be a fun cribbage partner.

Just…get her out of my heart.

glurgh…someone please make this stop playing in my head.

here is a cute picture of my hamster as an apology.

Weird Science*

Weird Science*

imageThis past weekend we had some challenging training weather. Although Joaquin didn’t shut us down, it certainly wasn’t what I would call a nice day to go riding. I did ride, though. I rode just over ten miles into a headwind. I believe that headwind should mean that it counts as more than just ten. But two things from this weekend bring up my topic for this post.

How does science justify the things that happen? There are two of them for this week.

Magic miles: I rode a route that I have ridden before. The last time I rode it, I clocked 11.3 miles on my GPS. Sunday when I rode, it only clocked 10 miles. I understand that there will be variation because of how tight you take a corner, switch lanes, etc. But how in the world can it make a 10% difference.

Up hill, both ways: Technically this should be “into the wind, both ways.” Is there some bizarre meteorological or geographical anomoly that makes the wind blow south on the east side of the river and north on the west. It makes no sense to me.

In other news, I went to a track meet last night. I did the 100m in my wheelchair for a PR (personal record)**. Even better? I got to hang out with two other wheelchair athlete who were super-cool, super-supportive and super-bad-asses. Don’t you love their smiling faces?

*And now Thomas Dolby is playing in your head.

**It absolutely counts as a PR because I’d never done it before.

Thanks, Pope!

Thanks, Pope!

imageIn case you hadn’t heard, the Pope came to Philadelphia this weekend. They shut down much of the city with Jersey barriers, parade fences and security checkpoints. What did that mean for me and my training in this fabulous pedestrian wonderland? Riding the bike really wasn’t an option. Many intersections didn’t have enough remove between fences for the bike but it certainly had plenty of room for the manual wheelchair! Those closed streets meant that I could ride my wheelchair in the street. That means no cracks in the sidewalks, no curb cuts of terrifying steepness, no buckling of pavement that will dump me out of the chair if I’m travelling at speed.

So how did I measure up? 3.86 miles on Saturday and 4.60 miles on Sunday!

That’s a lot of miles and I am quite proud of it. I am giving me a big thumbs up…a filthy, blistered thumb.

but I earned it.

Will you sponsor me on this journey?  Click here.

Peak – a – boo

September 23, 2015 by Patricia

Things are better this week.

I meant to post a short update about how my black mood only lasted a day. Unfortunately, I was still in a black mood so it didn’t actually happen.

This week is much better. I had a great weekend of good workouts.

Part of my regimen includes commuting to and from the office on my manual wheelchair at least once a week. I’ve had the chair for a year and it has changed things a lot for me. I used the chair on Friday and rode the handcycle on Saturday and Sunday. That means my distance was
Friday: 5.3 miles
Saturday: 20 miles
Sunday: 13.1 miles

That’s three of the four Dopey races.

Now I’m wondering if I’m peaking too soon…
